What does an after-school nanny do?

An after-school nanny collects your children from school or nursery, brings them home or takes them to clubs and training, makes a healthy snack and dinner, supervises homework and keeps them active until you get home. Many also do bath and bedtime. Ours are sporty, so afternoons include football in the park, a bike ride or practice for the next match rather than a screen.

After-school nanny rates in London

After-school nannies in London are usually paid £15–£20 gross an hour. We recommend £15–£18 for entry-level nannies and up to £20 for experienced ones. On top of pay, you cover employer National Insurance above £96 a week, and our membership from £50 a month plus VAT includes payroll, backup care and support. Our London nanny cost guide has full worked examples.

After-school nanny, club or childminder?

An after-school club cares for a group at school until it closes. A childminder looks after several children in their own home. An after-school nanny works in your home for your children only, collects from more than one school, does the club runs and keeps your evening routine. It usually costs more than a club, but your children get one-to-one care from someone who knows their whole week.

School-run nannies and wrap-around care

If you need help in the morning too, the same nanny can do breakfast and the school drop-off, then come back for pick-up. That gives you wrap-around care before and after school from one familiar face, booked term by term on a fixed weekly schedule.

Choosing an after-school nanny agency

Whichever agency or app you use, check four things: how carers are vetted (Enhanced DBS, references, Right to Work, a face-to-face interview), what happens when your nanny is ill, whether there's a replacement guarantee, and who runs payroll. With us that's Enhanced DBS and in-person interviews, backup care included in membership, unlimited replacements in every membership tier, and payroll set up for you.

Common questions

Which areas of London do you cover?
All 32 London boroughs and the City, from our base in Twickenham. Every carer we place lives within 30 minutes of your home.
Can the same nanny do before-school drop-off too?
Yes. Our before and after school nannies cover school or nursery drop-off in the morning and pick-up in the afternoon, so you get wrap-around care from one familiar face, booked term by term.
Is an after-school nanny better than an after-school club?
A club looks after a group at school until it closes. A nanny collects your children, takes them home or to their clubs and training, supervises homework, makes dinner and can stay for bath and bedtime. You get one-to-one attention and the same carer every week.
How much does an after-school nanny cost in London?
Nanny pay is £15–£20 gross an hour depending on experience, paid to your nanny through payroll we set up. Our membership is separate, from £50 a month plus VAT for one day a week. For example, 3 afternoons of 4 hours at £16 an hour comes to around £214 a week including membership, plus any employer National Insurance.
What does an after-school nanny do?
School or nursery pick-up and drop-off, snacks and meals, homework supervision, driving to clubs and training, active play and sport, and the evening routine of bath and bedtime.
How quickly can you find an after-school nanny?
Our team sends a same-day shortlist of 2–3 locally based candidates, arranges a trial afternoon before you commit, and checks in weekly for the first month. September starts are usually matched during the previous term.
What happens if our after-school nanny is ill?
Backup care is included in membership. If your regular nanny is unwell we arrange cover from our standby pool of vetted carers.
How many hours does an after-school nanny work?
Usually 3pm–7pm on 2 to 5 school days, so roughly 8 to 20 hours a week in term time. Add the morning school run and it becomes before and after school care, from one nanny.
Is an after-school nanny employed or self-employed?
Almost always employed. A nanny who works in your home to your routine counts as your employee for HMRC, so you run payroll, pay employer National Insurance where it applies and offer a pension once they earn over £10,000 a year. Our membership sets up the payroll for you.
Do I pay my after-school nanny in the school holidays?
It depends on the contract. Term-time-only nannies are part-year workers, so their paid holiday builds up at 12.07% of the hours they work. Our nanny holiday entitlement guide explains how to work it out.
How are your nannies vetted?
Every carer has an Enhanced DBS check, First Aid, verified references, ID and Right to Work checks, and a face-to-face interview with us before they meet your family.
